Medical care and support for Ivan and Irwin Chen

My Cousin Vivian is one of the strongest people I have ever met. Her endurance, resilience, and faith have always been inspirational to me. She has faced the ugliness of betrayal, endured verbal and physical abuse, and overcome many obstacles as a single parent. Yet, she has never lost faith or love for her family.
Vivian was so happy with her nuclear family; she felt complete with a husband and two healthy sons. Things took a dark turn when her now ex-husband became verbally and physically abusive. The divorce was ugly, and he left them all without financial support. Vivian became the sole supporter for Ivan and Irwin. She struggled for many years, but looking at her sons’ faces, filled her heart with love and happiness. They have been her life.
On Sunday, January 19, 2020, Vivian’s only sons, Ivan (23) and Irwin (17), were involved in a car accident where they sustained critical head injuries. When I heard this tragic news, my heart sunk. I was trembling and out of breath. Having two sons of my own, my heart ached for the boys - and for Vivian. How can one cope with the trauma of this magnitude? Ivan and Irwin are currently in the ICU at the Pomona Valley Medical Center, where they both are still in a coma. This has been an extremely trying time for Vivian, but to her credit, her daily focus has been on being strong and ever-present for her sons.
Ivan and Irwin are Vivian’s whole world and they have such promising futures. Ivan graduated last year from Cal Poly Pomona and was ready to take on the real world. He is wise beyond his years and has so much optimism about life. His friends love his empathy, generosity, compassion and how he makes those around him feel special. Irwin is a senior at Diamond Bar HS – excited about graduation and dreaming about where he would go to college. He is such a fun-loving, caring and determined kid – especially when he’s on the soccer field! He loves to make people laugh and his own laugh is so infectious. He is such a good and generous friend – he’s always been there to defend and help those in need.
As we all know, medical expenses in the United States can be extremely costly. The majority of the cost of Irwin and Ivan’s treatment not covered by insurance will fall heavily on Vivian’s shoulders. This fundraiser has been established to help ease the burden on her so the family can focus on healing. All funds raised will go directly to Ivan and Irwin’s medical-related expenses.
Please feel free to share this fundraising effort with your families and friends even if they personally don’t know them. Any donation that you are able to make will greatly bless this family. Not only will this help Irwin and Ivan get the best medical care, but it will also help this family feel the love and support from people around the world.
