Dontez's Cancer Fight

Dontez was taken to the hospital on Friday June 23 with a broken leg.  His leg was not broken.  Xray's showed a potential for osteosarcoma and he was admitted to KU Med.  That horrible diagnosis has been confirmed.  The stage 3 cancer has eaten completely through his left femur.  Once the tumor can be reduced, his leg will be amputated.  This poor kid is 8 years old and his life has just been turned upside down.  

Dontez's family is just your regular paycheck-to-paycheck Topeka family.  A crisis like this would be difficult for most people, but when you are already stretching the paycheck to the end of the month, it is financially devastating.  Luckily, his medical bills will be taken care of.  However, his mom is in Kansas City with him and missing work.  Not being at home brings all kinds of extras - extra gas, extra food - nothing is simple or cheap when you're living in a hospital room.  And KU Med Center will be home for Dontez and his mom for at least 2 more weeks.  Dad is at home in Topeka with Dontez's two little brothers.  This family has a long battle to fight.  

I really want to help relieve a tiny bit of the stress by allowing Candace to only think about her son and what he needs.  She shouldn't have to think about keeping the lights on at home or the $5 it would cost to bring her sick boy McDonald's.  Dontez should have whatever will make this horrible ordeal better, even if that is just a cheeseburger and fries.
