Medical Equipment for Malawi

Donation protected
Hi!

From Nottingham High School, UK. Please help our cause:

The aim of our fundraiser is to provide medical supplies to address mother and infant mortality rates in Malawi in order to contribute towards the overall eradication of health inequality. We will focus on supplying these resources across Malawi, before volunteering at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Centre in Blantyre.

Malawi is a scenic country celebrated for its loving people, known as Africa’s ‘Warm Heart’. However, the joy and resilience of the people is not an excuse to ignore their struggles. Unfortunately, local hospitals continue to suffer from a lack of resources, staff, and funding. Health centres just don’t have the resources to overcome record-high mother and infant mortality rates (without considering budgets or COVID-19 repercussions). Recently, the health system has faced even more challenges as resources like ventilators, testing and vaccines have to be prioritised over basic medical equipment readily available in the UK.

To help tackle these mother and infant mortality rates, which are some of the highest rates globally, we hope to supply the following to the hospital:

For Maternal mothers (in hospital wards):

  • Reusable cloth nappies: These are not only environmentally friendly but also long-lasting. These are what are used locally and can be sustainable for mothers in the long run.

  • Plastic buckets: Plastic buckets are extremely useful for a wide range of uses. Mothers can use these regularly for washing, drawing water, and bathing.

  • Maize meal porridge: This can feed both mother & infant, a vital and widely grown crop in Malawi.

For the Medical Facilities:

  • Blood Pressure Monitors
  • Thermometers
  • Scrubs
  • Re-usable Aprons
  • Ambu bags (neonatal)

Cost

To be sourced locally in Malawi:
  • 200 nappies at £0.50 each = £100
  • 50 Plastic buckets at £2.50/unit = £125
  • 100 porridge at £1.00 = £100

To be sourced in the UK:
  • 5 Blood pressure monitors at £20/u = £100
  • 20 Thermometers at £3.00 = £60
  • 2 pairs of 50 scrubs at £30/u = £60
  • Reusable aprons (1 box at 10.99) = £110
  • Ambu bags (neonatal) (1 box of 50 at 11.99 = £360
  • 4 Heaters for Chiradzulu District Hospital at £90 each = £360

This is in agreement with a list of equipment provided by QEHC and totals £1,375 and 2.9% VAT + 0.25.
We also hope to obtain supplies to donate to schools and orphanages.

Please give anything you can, thank you for your time :)
