Sail Canada National Championships

Donation protected
We are ready to compete at a national level in the Sail Canada National Youth Championships, which will be held between August 28th and September 1st at St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia.

To achieve our goals, we need to raise $8000 by August 24th, 2017.

Our goals:
Competing in the Sail Canada National Championships is a really big step forward for us. Ever since we started sailing at the age of 12 we’ve dreamed about competing in a regatta of this calibre. Finally having this opportunity so close is really exciting for us. Two-thirds of this funding will go towards attending the National Championships.

One-third of the funding will be dedicated to purchasing a high quality, second hand 470 sailing dinghy. Owning our own boat here on Saltspring would allow us to increase our training schedule in a big way. We would go out after school to practice, upping our training from one day a week in the winter and spring to potentially five days a week. To move up and start competing at the world level we’ll need to switch into the 470.

We are committing all of our savings to attend this event and boat purchase, as well as several hours on the water training per day. This is our passion and we want to pursue it fully and without compromise.

Support from our mentor and former coach, Greg Slakov, Juniour Race Team Coach, Saltspring Island Sailing Club.

About Us:
We are Callum and Cianan McGuffin, 18 year old twin brothers living on Saltspring Island,  B.C. and racing out of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. We’ve been sailing together for about six years, and competitively racing for a little over two years. We’ve made great progress in our sailing skills in this short time, currently ranking first on the BC Sailing Association 2017 Race Circuit.

Being twins is certainly an asset while racing. Ever since we were young, we have had a much clearer understanding of each other than other people. This understanding is a huge advantage to us as a team working together on the boat. We can anticipate one another's actions and communicate swiftly and clearly, allowing us to focus more on boat handling.

We love sailing because of the teamwork and precision required to compete. When we’re out on the race course it’s like a giant chess game, but faster and more physical. We love the challenge in predicting how the wind might shift, and positioning the boat in the best place to take advantage of those shifts while balancing the risk of getting too far from the fleet and falling behind. Sailing combines tactical thinking, complex rules, and intense physical work, making it the perfect balance of mental and physical, and we thrive on every aspect of this sport.

Since we started racing together competitively in 2015 with the Saltspring race team, we’ve dedicated many hours to training, and  In most regattas, we’ve been rewarded with podium positions. We placed:
3rd- Maple Bay Regatta 2015,  Maple Bay, BC
1st- Maple Bay Regatta 2016, Maple Bay, BC
2nd- Bluenose Regatta 2016, Vancouver, BC
2nd- Spring Dinghies Regatta 2017- Victoria, BC
3rd-Frozen Assets Regatta 2017-Victoria BC
3rd- Waves Regatta 2017- Vancouver, BC
3rd- BC Provincial 420 Championships 2017- Comox, BC

We are currently ranked number 1 on the BC sailing Association BC circuit for the 420 class.

Our long term goal is to compete in the summer Olympic games in the 420’s big brother, the 470. Jumping up from competing at the provincial level to the national level is a huge step towards this goal. We’re also working towards competing in the Round the World Volvo Ocean race.

Thank you for your help! It is only with your support that we can realize our dreams!
