Teaching English in Thailand

Like any other undergraduate senior, I spent a good portion of last semester trying to figure out what my next step would be. As a psychology major, I felt overwhelmed by the different directions I could pursue and I felt pressure to find a decent job.
But, not like every other senior, I let my heart win over my head (and my bank account) so instead of finding a stable, conventional job for the next few years, I found an amazing year-long program that will allow me to teach English to children in Thailand. Yep, Thailand. THAILAND. So instead of doing the morning commute on a subway, I'll likely be scooting to work on a motorbike where I get to share our wonderful language with students and in turn, learn their beautiful language and culture from them.
At this point, I have been confirmed by the company I'm working with, GeoVisions, to start orientation and a TESOL (Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages) course on June 29th. This means that I'll be in a classroom in August (so soon!) and will get paid in September. Up until recently, I've been caught up in the romanticism of moving to a gorgeous country with friendly people (and fantastic food) to pursue my passion of teaching and traveling but I'm beginning to realize that the logistics will be tougher than I expected. So, I've started this GoFundMe in the hopes that anyone who supports education, travel, University of Richmond alumni, or broke college students will donate a dollar or two to help cover the program cost, TESOL certification, plane ticket, and other initial expenses.
In return, I will keep a blog of my teaching and travels in Thailand over the next year and do my best to represent our country and culture as I immerse myself in a new one.
