Maywood Education Fair 2017

The Maywood Education Fair is an event created to bring educational opportunities and resources to the community of Maywood and its surrounding cities. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate to students and their families how pursuing higher education is possible.

Originally a student’s class project, the Maywood Education Fair evolved into an event hosted by the graduate students of the Master of Science in Higher Education program at California State University, Fullerton in coordination with the College of Education and the Center for Research on Educational Access and Leadership. It focuses on the importance of the community's cultural wealth and ultimately aims to develop a college-going culture in Maywood and its surrounding cities in Southeast Los Angeles.


The Maywood Education Fair has continued to expand every year while increasing awareness of college admissions, financial aid, and other resources to the residents of Maywood and surrounding cities. As a large low-income and underserved Latino community, Maywood and its surrounding communities have approximately 48 percent of students graduate from high school, and only a small percentage of students pursue higher education. Our impact on the community resulted in a 4.4% increase in students attending college from 2009 to 2013. According to U.S. Census, there was also a 2.3% to 4.3% increase in the number of Bachelor's degree or higher obtained from 2000 to 2013 in the city of Maywood. 


Our annual fair has reached over 2,000 residents in the past 8 years, and we aim to continue reaching out to more neighborhoods in Southeast Los Angeles and offer more scholarships to deserving high school students. In addition, the fair will provide programs and workshops in financial aid, college admissions, community resources, and fun and engaging events to our participants.
