Maxine K. Shepard's Cancer Treatment
Don protégé
Our mom, Maxine K. Shepard, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September, 2020. Multiple myeloma is an incurable cancer of the plasma cells which fight infection and are a critical part of the body’s immune system. The cells are formed in the bone marrow, mutate, and overtake the healthy white blood cells which in our mom’s case, has led to spine damage, the formation of 5 tumors, two of which have inflicted severe damage to her jaw, leg, and chest area. This has led to her losing some function due to neuropathy of her right foot. This cancer can go years and even decades undetected, which is the case with our mom. She is in stage 3 MM, which is the highest stage. She’s been undergoing treatment including numerous types of chemotherapy, radiation, and will be receiving tandem autologous stem cell bone marrow transplants in 2021. For this procedure only her cells can be used, therefore creating a stressful gamble if the cells will be able to form in the dead area from radiation and other treatments.
Having depleted our savings and with mom no longer able to work, we are unable able to pay the enormous medical bills that come weekly which are not covered by insurance. We are reaching out to you for help to alleviate the financial stress so that mom can focus on fighting to live. Your generosity will pay the medical expenses incurred from her treatments, medications, and in-patient hospital stays.
We ask that you keep our mother in your prayers and please donate what you can as cancer not only depletes a loved one physically but myself and my brother are determined to see her continue to be the artist she is, the athlete, go to the beach, NYC, and enjoy the things she's always loved in her life. For that reason we ask for your support, donations small or large, any bit helps in protecting her health and what we have left as a family.
The last bit is from my mom, and I hope you are able to see the amazing person she is and why we are fighting so desperately to help save her life.
“Although I can’t pay you back, I can offer my prayers for you and your loved ones, as well as the fervent promise to give back someday through my experience, creativity and passion to make a difference in someone else’s life.
It is with love and gratitude that I thank you for your generosity and compassion.”(Maxine)
Respectfully,
Max and Jared Shepard
