Mauritius Oil Spill (Official Canada funding)

Donation protected
Mauritius is a small island located on the east coast of Africa surrounded by turquoise water. The ship, MV Wakashio, ran aground at Pointe d'Esny in the south of the island in late July, is believed to have been carrying around 4,000 tons of fuel, of which nearly 1,200 tons have already spilled along 15 km of the coastline. The local communities and authorities have been working day and night to clean up the oil spill.

On August 24, the ship was deliberately sunk and two days after more than 50 dead dolphins were washed on the shores of beaches in the south of the island. The tug boat which was pulling a barge containing oil from the spill had an accident on August 31st and out of the 8 clean up crew members on board, 3 passed away and one is still missing. The marine ecosystem, fishermen, their families, and the economy are affected by this unfortunate event.

"The impact is likely to remain for years."

Our campaign is to raise funds to contribute to a long-term project proposed by local NGOs which will help with marine life conservation. The project we are funding is for the Newreef an NGO, the money will be sent to them by bank transfer.

NEW REEF has been established with the aim to sensitize and promote active and passive restoration of the reef ecosystem around Mauritius. NEW REEF is coming forward with an Innovative and sustainable Reef Restoration Program! For more information visit:https://www.facebook.com/newreefmauritius/about/?ref=page_internal
