The Bettan Garvi School Initiative

This school initiative was inspired by Bettan Garvi, who together with her husband Arne Victor Garvi founded the Eden Foundation in Niger, West Africa []. Bettan's reason for coming to Niger was to see the children live beyond the age of five. In addition to her work as co-founder of Eden Foundation, helping the farmers of Tanout live sustainable healthy lives through food-production trees, she set up a Saturday kids group for the children of the Eden workers and of other families she knew. They would sing, play, draw and do various fun educational assignments. It was Bettan's dream to see all these kids in school and had she had the means to do so, she would have sponsored every one of them herself. Instead, she and Arne Victor sponsored six. When Bettan Garvi passed away in 2008, many people pitched in to continue supporting these six kids through school.

This triggered an initiative to invite people to sponsor one child through school, an initiative that quickly took off thanks to the encouraging response of all of you! As of late November 2014, we have 45 children sponsored in school and so the fulfillment of Bettan's dream continues!
