Maurice Levin Collen GoFundMe Campaign

On Wednesday, January 13th, 2021, Maurice Levin Collen left this world and ascended to Heaven.

Maurice, or as he was more affectionately known to many as Maury, Mo, Big Mo, Uncle Mo and most importantly Dad/ Daddy, was an inspiration to us all, never giving up and continuing to fight courageously until the very end.

After his passing, the outpour of love has been tremendous. Countless friends and supporters have asked what they can do to help, so the friends and family of Maurice Levin Collen have decided to start a GoFundMe in his memory.

The money raised will help to only partially support Maury’s wife Lesa, and children, Emma and Aaron during these tough times. The family depended on the small amount of income Maury was producing and the checks Maury received every month to pay for food and all of their bills.

It will also be used to further Emma’s educational expenses as she seeks to eventually earn a Masters in Accounting after her graduation in May of 2021 from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for her Bachelors in Accounting. Likewise, the money raised will be used to fund Aaron’s education. Aaron is currently a Freshman at RIT, on pace to graduate in May of 2024 with a degree in Art and Industrial design.

After being diagnosed with Acromegaly at the age of 28, Maury experienced more than his fair share of surgical procedures as a result of this illness and his head and neck cancer diagnosis later in life. Maury always focused his mind and energy to recovering and regaining his health, thus leaving him unable to work for extended periods of time, which impacted his ability to provide for those that loved him most.

Despite undergoing more hardship and pain than any human should have to endure, Maury kept fighting and never asked for help. The only time Maury sought help was to aid him in recovering from his addiction to prescribed opioids, after he developed a dependence from the pain associated with decades of surgeries and operations.

Between chemo treatments and doctor appointments, Maury began driving for Uber. This was the first job Maury had in decades. He relished the opportunity to share some time and conversations while he helped his fellow Poughkeepsians get to where they needed to be.

Although Maury continued to suffer, he constantly and unselfishly always asked those around him how they were doing. When they reciprocated in asking the same question- despite his many distresses- Maury would always respond happily because he had two amazing kids to brag about… And brag about them he would.

Unfortunately, the cancer continued to spread and took Maury away from the two things he desired the most: The ability to earn a living for his family and the loss of his voice, rendering him unable to converse with others due to radiation side effects to his vocal cords.

Words cannot express how thankful the family is for the continued support from those that knew and loved Maury for the gentle, loving, kind-hearted, man he was. Any amount will help.
