Matthew Fabian’s MEDULLOBLASTOMA CANCER FIGHT
20 years old, last year of college at Bemidji State University for his Biochemistry, Molecular,
Cellular Biology Degree and Biology with a medical emphasis degree, RA, researcher on the “Cancer Research Team” and "Pulmonary Fibrosis Team”, trumpet player, trap
shooter, outdoorsman, 4.0 student, just an all around great guy!
From what started out with just a nagging headache and a little nausea...Matthew getting it checked out the 22nd of July 2020 turned into:
Being LIFE FLIGHTED to a different hospital to have a life saving surgery to remove a MASS from his brain stem....having a STROKE a day and a half later (loss of swallowing ability, right side weakness, double vision)...having a BRAIN DRAIN inserted to relieve pressure...getting PNEUMONIA...having brain drain BREAK OFF in his brain on removal(needed surgery to remove)...learning how to sit, stand, walk again(with assistance)then before leaving this hospital after just under a month finding out the mass was CANCER! Medulloblastoma!
A week after being released From there he headed down to Mayo in Rochester, MN for 7 weeks for appointments and PROTON RADIATION for very high radiation for both his whole brain and spine.
Medulloblastoma has NO cure and NO remission. They check for tumors/growths with MRI’s. He will have them every 2 months for a couple years and then every 3 months, then 2 times a year and I believe after 10 years it’s yearly. It is a very aggressive cancer that is quite rare for a 20year old.
It’s been a tough road and he’s not done yet.
He is currently doing chemotherapy (cisplatin, etoposide, cyclophosphamide).
