Master in Animal Law and Society tuition fee

Donation protected
Since I was a child I believed that one should do something meaningful in life, something to help others and leave a legacy. I am the first woman of my family who left the country in the search of academic accomplishments and now I am ready to pursue the most important goal in my life.

My name is Rosa Maria Cajiga Morales and I am a Lawyer. Since several years it has been a dream of mine to undertake a Master Degree in Animal Law and Society and now I decided to enroll in the University of Barcelona for the year 2020 course. Unfortunately I cannot afford the total amount of the tuition fees on my own, the total price is: 4020€, therefore I would like to ask for your help to fulfill my dream. Your contribution would not only make a great impact in my life but in the future, in the life of animals as well.

If you donate more than 50€/55$Usd you will receive a Calendar 2020 with animal photos taken by myself, as a token of my gratitude.

I grew up surrounded by animals and had the fortune to get to know real close in each of everyone all of their different characteristics such as their curiosity, sociability, activity etc. Since young age I understood that they are complex sentient beings and the most fascinating thing for me. Since then I developed a great empathy for them and I could not believe how some people would dare to harm them, when they are capable of suffering just as we are.

During my law studies I realized that the best way to help animals was to advocate for them, since their voices are silent to humans. I specialized in environmental law and worked as a consultant for a local law firm in my city. There I had the opportunity to modify and draft environmental laws as a request from local governments of several Mexican states but what I was most passionate about were the projects involving animal law. Here I found a real need for justice, within the voiceless animals.

I took several courses in Animal welfare including one at Edinburgh University and worked as a volunteer with the Animal Welfare Foundation/Tierschutzbund Zürich (Switzerland). I also was member of the Bioethics Committee of the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro (Mexico).

I also love to work hands on with animals.  I have assisted veterinary doctors and helped nurse small wild animals back to health. A highlight was the voluntary work at a local animal shelter where I participated in a program to train the resident dogs who had problems finding a home due to their behavioral problems.

The Master Degree in Animal Law and Society is the first European Master in this field. This degree is oriented towards professional specialisation and aims to train up experts in animal-related work, from a global legal perspective, attending to the needs of a society that is becoming more and more aware of the legal implications of treating animals as sentient beings.

This master's is markedly interdisciplinary in nature and aspires to provide a well-rounded education by combining animal-related subject areas within law, ethology, nutrition, welfare, ethics, art and entertainment, organisation and social responsibility.

It also has a strong practical bias, as the aim is to produce professionals who can tackle the new challenges facing society with regard to animals. These professionals are given the theoretical and practical tools that today's interconnected society expects as it becomes more and more aware of the importance of treating animals well for the sake of sustainable development and community life.

Why I think it is so important to help animals:

•          Millions of people depend on animals to live

•          We are currently living the sixth mass extinction, which is one of the most significant extinction events in the history of the Earth, billions of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians have been lost and their population will continually decrease because of human actions.

•          The incidence and spread of animal diseases is affected by how animals are treated, that is why their welfare is of great importance, not only for them but also for human health and for the environment.

•          All animals are able to suffer. They feel hunger, thirst, discomfort, pain, fear, distress and have the necessity to express their natural behavior. Whenever we consider doing something that would interfere with their needs, we are morally obligated to take that into account.

•          Because we should extend our empathy, compassion and kindness to everybody including animals.

Thank you for your help!
