Mary's Fight Against COVID-19

Donation protected
Dear Friends and Family,

I want to tell you about Mary Corio, a wonderful person who is going through an extremely difficult time in her life. Mary is a strong-willed Italian woman, from Niagara county.  Mary is a social butterfly who has great energy and carries a smile on her face and has a conversation with a stranger everywhere she goes. She has never hesitated to help others in any way she could, whether it be a friend, a family member, or a stranger. She has a son and two grandchildren that are her world.  Unfortunately, most of you know that on March 19th Mary Corio entered the ICU due to complications associated with COVID-19.  To date, she has gone through an incredibly difficult medical journey, and needs your help as she fights towards a meaningful recovery.

About Mary’s special medical journey:
Mary has been affected immensely from the COVID-19 virus. During her six weeks in the ICU, COVID-19 lived and thrived in her lungs, causing devastating damage, and requiring that she remain on full life-support, paralytic, and sedations for weeks. During this crisis, her family was not able to see, hold, or comfort her. Nonetheless, Mary and her medical team persisted through the pain, the fear and the uncertainty of her survival. Recently, Mary has had some steps in the right direction.  She successfully had a tracheotomy and has been lifted from all sedations, so she is much more aware of her surroundings.  The work starts now however to get Mary off the ventilator and into the extensive rehabilitation Mary will need to learn how to walk, talk, and eat again.

Our gratitude:
There were many days Mary’s family didn’t know if they would be able to see her again.  The past week, her son has been able to go sit by her side for 4 hours a day sending words of encouragement to keep pushing and working hard for all her loved ones outside of those hospital walls waiting for her to be back on her dancing feet. We are all very grateful to her medical team which consisted of dozens of dedicated physicians, surgeons, and nurses who would not give-up on her.

Our ask for help:
Mary is facing a long road to recovery both medically and financially. Even with the great efforts, she has not been successful in coming off the ventilator. The hard but necessary decision to move her to a hospital specialized in ventilator weaning in Erie, PA was made by her family that will help her the next step in her recovery.  The doctors there specialize in vent weaning and she will be able to start the necessary occupational, physical, and speech therapy, in hopes she can go back to the life she used to live.  This decision was not taken lightly as insurance will not cover it. This specialized facility does come at a hefty cost of upwards of $3,000 per day, which does not include doctors’ fees. However, Selects Hospital is best chance at life and life doesn’t have a dollar sign tied to it.  We are asking for your help by donating and/or sharing this page to help Mary and her family fund her recovery. She deserves to live life as she had prior to her fight with COVID-19. We hope someday soon Mary will be strong enough to tell her story and to express her gratitude for everybody who stood beside her in her fight.

With Sincere Appreciation, keep the prayers up…they have worked thus far!
