Hello,
I am a 43 year old mother of 2 girls(ages 10 and 4) and a 7th grade language arts middle school teacher. I was recently diagnosed with Stage I Multiple Myeloma. This is a type of blood cancer that just over 15 years ago, had a very short life expectancy (2-4 years). Several breakthroughs have occurred so that now the life expectancy is about 15-18 years. My doctor firmly believes that by then, we will have a cure! For now, I will complete a 4 month round of chemo and then be evaluated for the next steps.
Procedure: The gold standard of care for MM is a stem cell transplant. It will require a 2 week hospital stay in isolation and I will lose all of my hair. I will be in Gainesville, FL while my husband cares for our two girls. Upon my return home, I will be required to stay home for 100 days.
How you can help: Our income will be negatively affected even with short term disability. Kevin will also have to take time off to care for me when I'm back from the hospital. From what I've read, I will very sick and weak for the first few weeks. I'm hoping the Go Fund money will offset our lost income.
I am not going to let all of this get me down! I am 100% sure that I am going to beat this horrible cancer. I am a bit worried about my financial situation as we will be a one income household for a while and this disease may rewureq further aggressive treatments. I am hoping this disease will not cause severe financial strain on my family. Thanks!
