Mary the "Tough Cookie" Needs Help After Accident

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Beth Liddell, and I'm raising funds to help my mom, Mary Carr Liddell, recover after being struck by a car outside her home in Dothan, Alabama.

On the evening of April 12th, Mom was watching her neighbor's French bulldog, Spanky, when it got away from her and darted towards the highway. She immediately gave chase and ran in front of an oncoming car. The driver cranked the wheel and tried to swerve around her, but she was hit and thrown to the side of the road. The passenger in the vehicle, a former EMT, jumped out of the car and administered first aid. Mom was transported to the hospital with a head injury, bleeding on the brain, a shattered right leg, and a fractured left wrist and shoulder. Sadly, poor Spanky was also hit by the car, and didn't survive.

As of this afternoon (April 15th), Mom is still in critical but stable condition. My brother Will is visiting her frequently. Her leg surgery went well yesterday, and now we're playing "wait and see" with the brain bleed. Occasionally, Mom smiles or utters a few random words, but she's very confused, and she doesn't recognize my brother yet. The good news is that her bubbly personality and sense of humor continue to shine through. Every now and then, she exclaims "Hoo boy!" or "Whew! What a day!"

Mom is a strong-willed, independent woman, but the doctors say it could be a long time before she's able to take care of herself. Once she's released from the hospital, she'll need at least four weeks of inpatient rehabilitation, and we might need to move her to a long-term care facility after that. We have no idea how much this will cost, or which expenses her insurance company will cover. Mom is on a modest fixed income, and my brother and I have limited resources, so we decided to ask for assistance.

To Mom's friends and neighbors, we are deeply grateful for your compassion and support over the past few days. Also, to everyone who's sent well-wishes to local media, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your kindness means a lot to us, and we know it will mean a lot to Mom.

If you have the financial means, please consider making a donation to help us defray the costs of uncovered medical bills and future expenses related to Mom's care, such as in-home nurse visits, purchase of mobility devices, installation of accessibility features in her home and vehicle, and potential relocation to a long-term care facility. Please know that we will greatly appreciate any amount you give, even if it's only a dollar or two.

If you're unable to donate, but would like to help in some way, please click the "contact" button below to send a little note to Mary. We will read your messages to her when she's a bit further along in her recovery.

Thank you so much!
