Hello Friends & Family of Marty Carew;
As some of you already know, my dear friend Marty has been very ill since last summer. By November he lost 25 pounds. Initial tests revealed his ileocecal valve wasn’t working properly so he began treatment with a Naturopath. In December Marty was admitted to hospital. Over the next 5 weeks Marty lost another 15 pounds with 8 visits in and out of the emergency room. One admission requiring emergency surgery where Marty had 8 inches of his small bowel removed. Resection was not possible due to malnourishment and the usage of steroids for inflammation, so a stoma was created and an ileostomy bag was attached for Marty’s elimination purposes.
The pathology report came back confirming a diagnosis of crohn's disease (this was expected). It also supported a diagnosis of cancer, which shocked them. Fortunately, it did not metastasize anywhere else in his body.
Marty will require 6 months of chemotherapy. Then he will require more surgery to reset the small bowel to the colon. Marty is struggling to gain weight. He is very malnourished at 105lbs. Needless to say Marty has a long journey ahead of him and really needs our help.
Prior to getting sick Marty was always very health conscious. He loves being outside, playing golf, kayaking, camping, hiking, exploring or traveling. For his 40th birthday last year he drove a racecar at full speed on a professional track. Marty has always been the one to create and plan the next family adventure. For example at Chimera's 8th birthday Marty brought Master Chef Canada fully alive complete with embroidered aprons and trophies in their kitchen.
Marty has dedicated his life to working with children and folks with special needs. Bringing his passions to life when he created Young Wizards Academy, a children’s birthday party business in the lower mainland 3 years ago. As a sole proprietor, without the ability to work he does not get paid. His wife Cheryl will take on some of the workload but she already has 4 jobs and their almost 9-year-old daughter who is very brave but scared also needs her mother more than ever. Understandably, Cheryl wants to take time off to be with Marty to take him to doctors, chemotherapy and appointments.
Already two months off work, with the loss of wages and additional medical expenses expected over the next year I am reaching out to you, Marty’s friends and family and friends of family to help donate if you can. Your financial contribution towards Marty’s campaign will help Marty (and his loving family) so he can use the time he needs to heal without additional stress. The monies will go towards the costs of ostomy supplies, parking for chemo treatments, childcare, natural complimentary therapies (Meyers IV, TCM, prescriptions, organic foods and supplements.) These are on-going costs throughout his treatment.
I understand that you may not be able to donate money but even sending Marty a good vibe message and/or posting this on your social media is both, awesome, helpful and healing. “A simple act of caring creates and endless ripple”.
I thank you for taking the time to participate in Marty’s healing journey.
In Deep Gratitude.
