Mark Erckman Rehabilitation Page

On January 16, 2018, Mark was traveling to work, when he was catastrophically injured in a multi car collision.   He suffered a disclocation of his C6 & C7 vertebrae, resulting in a complete spinal cord injury.  Sadly, Mark is now paralyzed from the neck down and is categorized as a paraplegic.

He is currently receiving treatment at CMC Main in Charlotte and is unable to speak due to a trachea vent  that is helping him breath until he is strong enough for it to be removed.  He presently has limited mobility in his shoulders, arms and wrist.  He will most likely not regain the use of his hands.

Mark will require long term rehab, extensive physical & occupational therapy, and long term medical care.  Mark’s family has selected the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA, to help him adjust to his new life.  This is one of the best ranked facilities in the country for this type of injury and gives Mark the best chance of regaining strength and mobility in his upper body as well as getting him off the ventilator he is currently dependent on.

To accommodate Marks new life requirements, his current home will either have to be remodeled to accommodate his wheelchair and other required handicap accessibilities or the family may need to relocate to a home that best suits his needs. The family will also need to purchase a handicap accessible van to help transport Mark. Additionally, the medical costs for this type of injury, not including current hospital and trauma unit charges, are in excess of $500,000 the first year and over a $100,000 annually.

If you’ve ever met Mark, you know he’s a friend to all.  He has a smile that will light a room and personality and love for people we should all hope to have.  To help lighten the burden on Mark’s family during this life changing event, his friends are asking for donations to help offset some of the imminent bills and expenses to come.  We’ve set the initial goal at $100,000 as the van will cost nearly $70,000 and home modifications will be costly as well.  No donation is too small as every penny helps prepare Mark for his new life.  More important than monetary gifts, we ask that you lift Mark and his family up in your prayers for as much healing and use of his arms and hands as possible.
