Mark Powell’s Cancer Battle Fund

Donation protected
To our friends, family, and whoever else might come upon this and feel compelled to give:

In December of 2004, our dad, Mark Powell was diagnosed with Stage III esophageal cancer. Despite the opinions from the medical community and the less than optimistic statistics, dad underwent surgery, chemo, and radiation to treat the diagnosed cancer.

There was without a doubt an initial shock, concern, fear regarding dads health and what the future might look like for him, and possibly without him. Thankfully, as most of you know, dad turned his attention towards the Father for His perspective on the situation. As dad was preparing for a youth event one Thursday evening in our home, he began asking God whether he was going to Live or die. Our faithful God was quick to respond and gave dad a verse out of Psalm 118:17 - “I will not die, but live, and tell of the works of the Lord”.

This word from God served our family well over the next several years. We had a firm hope that despite the ups and downs that come with the fight against cancer, dad was not going to die. We believed sincerely that God was going to heal him, and HE did! Over the next 3 years, dad went through the initial surgery and several rounds of chemo and radiation. 15 years later and he is still here telling his story!

This past October, we received some news that honestly blind-sided us. Dad has been diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer that has metastasized onto his spine and adrenal glands, as well as a recurrence of the esophageal cancer.  Once again, the statistics aren’t hopeful, but our family chooses not to look to statistics, but to the Creator of all, who is sovereign over everything; Who,  regardless of the outcome here on earth, will redeem and restore all things to Himself.

Dad and mom have been referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. MD Anderson is one of the most advanced cancer treatment centers in the world. The doctors, this far, have been extremely thorough and encouraging, working to accurately diagnose the cancer and ensure the treatment plan will kill all cancer in dad’s body. Although we trust ultimately in the Creator of ALL, we are also thankful for optimistic doctors who have cared for dad and mom during this journey.

Dad and mom have already made a couple trips to Houston, TX from Mobile, AL. The 7 hour journey, with all the included expenses (gas, food, lodging, medical bills) will add up over the next several months. We are asking that you consider supporting our family by financially contributing to dad’s fight against cancer! We want to relieve as much of the financial burden as we can, so dad and mom can focus on treatment and rest!

Thank you for taking the time to read dad’s condensed story. We trust in God’s faithfulness and hope that you will experience His goodness as you see His ultimate story unfold in dad’s life!
