Miles for Mark

Hi Everyone!

My Name is Carly Newton and I am writing this on behalf of my father. My dad Mark Newton was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver (chronic liver damage from a variety of causes leading to scarring and liver failure) back in 2002. Over the years he has fought his battle with the disease facing many hospitalizations due to the liver and kidneys not working properly. Due to the decline of his condition, on a routine abdominal scan in March 2021, his doctors discovered six masses contained in his liver that unfortunately are cancer. Out of the 6 masses, 3 of them require Chemotherapy and he has been undergoing those treatments since April 2021. The other 3 smaller masses have a high probability of becoming cancerous and will have to be watched closely. As we all know Cancer is unpredictable, but for now those are the only masses on the liver. For him to qualify for a liver transplant the masses must shrink and stay manageable for him to get on the transplant list. Hoping that the chemo treatments are effective, and the masses shrink, the transplant team will then approve him to get on the list and the waiting will begin for a new liver. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the timeline, to get a liver the patient has at least a 6-month waiting period, and to get a liver could take months to years. His chemotherapy and liver transplant journey will be a very long and expensive process despite us having insurance coverage. We don't know when the transplant could happen but we are trying to prepare to weather this storm. Right now, he will have frequent chemo sessions, dental work, follow up visits which includes regular blood, radiology follow ups and not to mention several other emergency department visits. These outpatient service visits even with insurance cost us a lot.

On Friday, July 23rd, 2021, Cycle Haus Nashville will be hosting a charity spin ride to help raise money for my dad and bring awareness to Liver Cancer. In addition, Natalie Stanton, the owner of Cycle Haus will be riding 8 hours and sharing this page to bring awareness to his journey. The goal is to raise $3,000 dollars with a portion of it being donated to the American Cancer Society . Any additional funds will be put away to go towards bills.

How you can donate:

Buy a Bike: 4 bikes are available (as of 7/9/21) and any donation over $25 is eligible for a bike while they last! You just have to tell us! You can reach out to Carly or Natalie. The ride will take place at 5:30 pm (please show up at least 10 minutes prior to start time) and it will last 45 minutes. Shoes will be provided if you do not have your own. After the ride is over, there will be a complimentary happy hour at 6:30 pm where we will cool off and have refreshments.

Donate through GoFundMe: If you would like to donate to the Marks journey you can donate through here!

I know that my Dad has more fight to give and any money raised could drastically help him continue his journey. In addition, once we have the final total I will let you know how much we raise for the American Cancer Society and what was donated. If you or someone you know has been affected by cancer and would like to share this page my Family and I would be forever grateful for your support.

I will be updating this page frequently.

xoxo
