In the past 4-6 weeks, Mark has noticed significant but gradual speech impairment. On Friday January 31st, Mark went by ambulance to St. Mary’s because it appeared he was having stroke like symptoms. As he arrived the ER staff felt it was more so seizure symptoms instead of stroke, but a CT was still performed to confirm. The CT did not show that he had any signs of a stroke. It did however show a large mass on the left side of his brain, but it was unclear at that time what it really was. At that time they determined that Mark required anti-seizure medication as they felt this was due to the mass. He was then quickly admitted to the hospital. The last test on Friday was an EEG to safely confirm he had stopped seizing.

An MRI was done on Saturday morning to get better imaging of the mass. Once the images were read the care team strongly felt it was a high grade Glioblastoma. Additional CT imaging was done to rule out if the brain tumor was a metastases from elsewhere in the body. They ruled that out after seeing the imaging and continued with the primary tumor as their priority.  That afternoon the neuro surgery team visited Mark to explain the next course of action. They would either progress with a full resection or a biopsy to test the DNA of the tumor.

On Sunday the surgeon told us that a full resection can not be done without hurting Mark and possibly impairing his abilities further. After a full day of the surgical team going over the plan at length, they decided on a biopsy of the tumor. That night Mark was made aware of the risks of the procedure and set up for Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning the family all gathered around to send him off to the OR. He left at 7:00 am for pre-op and they were well on there way at 9:30 am. Around 10:30 am we were called down to talk to the surgeon and she notified us of a well and completed biopsy. Just after lunch time Mark was in his new room at the ICU and ready to see a few of us at a time.

We are extremely grateful for the doctors, nurses and the encouragement Mark and the family has received during this time. We are also very excited to see him returning home within a few days. However, we know that this is the start of a long and expensive road of chemo, radiation and possible future operation(s).

The funds will be needed starting in the first few weeks as the medical bills begin arriving. These will be the costs that the insurance company wont cover. Also, Mark may not be able to return to work for a long period of time, which will stress the family finances.

We want to thank you for your generous giving, whether it be $1 or $100. Thank you.
