Mariner HS 2020 Lunch Debt

Donation protected
Mariner High School has over $50,000 in student lunch debt affecting their students. There is currently a $15,689.67 school debt stretched among 220 graduating seniors. Some debt is as high as -$656.00 for one student, while the lowest is -$0.25.

Student lunch debt should not be an added barrier for student success, given the ever present pressures of getting through high school, applying for colleges, and all the socio-economic issues that come along with this time in student’s lives.

Will you consider helping out?

Here are more details!
My name is Brittany, an Alumna of Mariner High School (MHS) in Everett, WA (c/o 2011).

I have worked with the Manager of Nutrition Services of Mukilteo School District, Brad, to identify the number of 2020 graduating MHS seniors who currently have lunch debt in hopes to address this with my fellow MHS Alumnus and Alumna.

Per MHS policy, all graduating seniors are eligible to walk. However if the student has a negative balance then they must pay off these fines in order to receive their diploma or official copies of their transcripts. At the end of the year, the school district has no choice but to write off this debt, at the cost of their operating budget taking the hit. The school district’s operational budget is for curriculum, computers, books, teachers, staff and other employees, all which benefit the student body.

By assisting in eliminating part of this lunch debt, we are working to put more money into the student’s success in the classroom.

All funds donated via this GoFundMe campaign will be given to Mukilteo School District for Mariner High School graduating seniors with lunch debt. Funds will be transferred via check made out to Mukilteo School District Nutrition Services.

Funds will be applied to Free and Reduced Price Meals (FRPMs) students first, and then be applied to those without this benefit. Per House Bill 2610, school districts “must exhaust all options to directly certify the student for FRPMs. If the school district is unable to directly certify the student for FRPMs, the district must provide the parent with application information for FRPMs in the notification”.

We are hoping to exceed this lofty goal, and if that's the case then funds will be applied to 2021 graduating seniors.

School personnel, school district personnel, and volunteers are prohibited from taking any action that would publically identify a student who cannot pay for a school meal or for meals previously served to the student, including requiring the student to wear an identifying marker or serving the student an alternative meal. These same personnel are also prohibited from:

· requiring a student who cannot pay for a school meal or previous meals to perform chores or other actions in exchange for a meal or the reduction of school meal debt;

· allowing a disciplinary action taken against a student to result in the denial or delay of a nutritionally adequate meal;

· requiring parents or guardians to pay fees or costs in excess of the actual amounts owed for meals previously served to the student.

Communications from a school or school district about amounts owed for previously served meals to a student under the age of 15 may only be directed to the student's parent or guardian. School districts must notify the student's parent or guardian of a negative balance on the student's school meal account within 10 days of the student earning a negative balance.

Within 30 days of sending this notice the district must exhaust all options to directly certify the student for FRPMs. If the school district is unable to directly certify the student for Free and Reduced Price Meals (FRPMs), the district must provide the parent with application information for FRPMs in the notification.

If a student has not paid for five or more previous meals, the school is required to take specified actions, including determining whether the student is categorically eligible for free meals, and having school personnel contact the parent or guardian to offer assistance with an application for FRPMs or other matters.
