Our beloved and brilliant friend, mentor, teacher and fearless leader Maria Hess, PhD, MFT, suffered a massive stroke on October 17th, 2017. Miraculously, she survived with her intellect and sense of humor fully intact, and after four months in assisted care, Maria has recently moved home. She has a tough road ahead as she continues her painful rehabilitation to regain her ability to walk, have full use of her left arm, and overcome other challenges to achieve her goal to return to her life’s work at the organization she co-founded, Humanidad Therapy & Education Services.
Maria’s Medicare insurance does not cover assisted home care, which is absolutely critical to her recovery. She will also need financial support for the alternative healing treatments that are currently working (acupuncture and water therapy), respite for her partner Doug, and other expenses related to her full recovery.

For those that may not know, Dr. Hess is a leader in the movement dedicated to exploring Trauma Informed Care in the mental health field, and a pioneer in her design of a bicultural Marriage & Family Therapist training program that utilizes culturally sensitive counseling services to strengthen Latino lives. She has over 40 years experience in the field of mental health and 35 years as an educator, psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and trainer. She has taught mindfulness to low-income youth in the Santa Rosa Middle Schools, been a featured speaker at national conferences, appeared locally on KBBF radio, and has worked tirelessly to understand and serve the needs of the migrant community in Sonoma County and beyond.
