Hi,

Meet Mariah, my loving, sweet, beautiful 11 year old little girl. The quest to solve Mariah’s medical journey started when she was only four weeks old. We could tell something wasn’t quite right and our quest for answers has been a long hard-fought journey. We knew there was something holding our beautiful little girl back, but we weren’t exactly sure what it was. Many tests and procedures later we have been blessed to find Dr. Chaves, a local Pediatric Neurologist. With the help of Dr. Chaves we found out that Mariah's Right Mesial Temporal Sclerosis (RMTS) spot in her brain needs to be removed.

Mariah has severe global development, epilepsy, and has now been diagnosed with a Right Mesial Temporal Sclerosis (RMTS) spot. Mariah suffers from a lack of sleep due to an active brain, seizures, and an ever-changing medicine regimen. All of which over the years have caused her to become a completely different person. Family outings or trips to the grocery store have become increasingly difficult. We have seen her try so hard and overcome so many obstacles in not only her learning ability, but physical ability as well. Surgery to remove the RMTS spot could allow her to be seizure free, live longer, and be able to strive in her development.

Mariah had a very large seizure in January of 2017. The seizure lasted for more than an hour and was followed by a second seizure lasting more than 15 minutes. Emergency seizure medication was administered during the ambulance ride. Mariah has been different in so many ways since that last seizure. Her love for school is gone along with a majority of the skills she has learned over the years. During the last two months of school Mariah spent her time in a calming room. Mariah has never needed to use the calming room at any point during her five years of education. Through the process of continually adding more seizure medication Mariah has experience manic episodes, angriness, no desire for routine- something she has loved her entire life. She has not lost the ability to maintain routine, but she is no longer in the mindset for routine.

We met with Dr. Chaves on June 27, 2017. Taking into consideration Mariah’s past seizure activity and the ineffective use of seizure medications he recommended that we take Mariah to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Chaves went on to explain how surgery to remove the RMTS would be the next most beneficial course of action. He suggested the Rochester Mayo Clinic as the closest possible location for neuro surgery of this kind.

Since the discovery of the RMTS many things have become explainable. At this point in Mariah’s journey we know that a diagnosis isn’t the main agenda. We are seeking to control her epilepsy which Dr. Chaves believes the RMTS is a major contributing factor. Mariah has been subjected to a number of tests, hospital stays, doctor appointments, and medicine changes, with things only getting worse. Dr. Chaves has given us hope for Mariah through the recommendation of the Rochester Mayo Clinic.

Now we know the where to go, but unfortunately since Mariah is a Medicaid recipient her insurance coverage will not allow for out of state treatment. We have spoken with the Rochester Mayo Clinic and they have a week long testing and prepping appointment scheduled for her starting September 19, 2017. The Clinic requires a $5,000 deposit before we can begin. Then of course after that will come the cost of surgery and recovery.

We greatly appreciate you taking the time to read and share our story. We want to thank you for your donations. We look forward to what the future holds for Mariah and will continue to update on her journey. Take care and God bless.

Sincerely,

Holly and Mariah
