MARES // Encuentros en Danza Butoh
M A R E S is a biennial butoh dance festival happening this Oct. 19 - Nov. 2 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
It is our privilege to announce that we will be joined this year by the Japenese company JINEN Butoh (http://www.jinen-butoh.com/) directed by Atsushi Takenouchi and Hiroko Komiya. They will be leading us in two intensive workshops that involve the body, butoh, and further exploration thru sound and music. One workshop takes place in the city of Guadalajara, and the other in the mountains outside of the city in Tapalpa. Doing workshops in nature has been an ongoing focus of JINEN. They will also be sharing their performance “Embrace, Life and death” in Guadalajara. We culminate the festival by doing a dance public intervention in the center of the city with all the students and participants of the workshops.
This year’s conference will host writers and researchers like dancer Aura Arreola (Mexico City) who has been working with a neuroscientist to see what happens to the brain when you dance butoh. Also, Gustavo Emilio Rosales (Mexico City) He is a critic, investigator, and teacher with a wide knowledge about the body and its inner dance. And finally, Angélica Iñiguez (Guadalajara) will present her book: "Searching for freedom, Experimental dance in Guadalajara". In it, she provides a larger view of how experimental dance has developed in our region, and the impact that butoh, among other avant-gard movements have had in the field.
We are making this call for contributions to fund the underlying costs of production and make these events accessible to a wider group of people. We are a self-funded festival that receives some help from the local cultural boards, but we rely on monetary donations or fees for participation. In an attempt to lower those fees for those who don’t have monetary means we are calling on your support. Contributing will help students of all disciplines, emerging artists, musicians, therapist, critics, researches, investigators, and the general public to come together thru dance and expression.

MARES es un festival bienal que ocurrirá del 19 de Octubre al 2 de noviembre en Guadalajara, México. Es un gran privilegio anunican que este año contaremos con la participación de la compañia japonesa JINEN Butoh, dirigida por Artushi Takenouchi y Hiroko Komiya. Ellos nos guiarán a traves de dos talleres que involucran el cuerpo, butoh y exploraciones a través del sonido y la música en vivo. Uno de los talleres tendrá lugar en la ciudad de Guadalajara y el otro a las afueras en las montañas de Tapalpa, Jalisco. El trabajo pedagógico en la naturaleza ha sido un elemento constante y parte de la búsqueda de JINEN como compañia. Además de esto presentaran la pieza “EMBRACE, Life and Death” y se realizará una intervención pública con los asistentes a los talleres.
Este año el panel de charlas albergará a escritores e investigadores como la bailarina Aura Arreola (CDMX) la cual ha estado trabajando de la mano con un neurocientífico en busca de qué es lo que le sucede al cerebro cuando baila butoh. Gustavo Emilio Rosales (CDMX) es escritor, crítico de danza, investigador y maestro con un conocimiento amplio en el campo del movimiento, del cuerpo y su devenir danza. Finalmente Angélica Íñiguez (Guadalajara) presentará su libro “En busca de la Libertad. Danza Experimental en Guadalajara” en él presenta una visión amplia de cómo la danza experimental se ha desarrollado en nuestra región y el impacto e influencia que tuvo el butoh así como otros movimientos de vanguardia.
Hacemos un llamado a la comunidad en busca de donaciones con la finalidad de cubrir los gastos de producción del festival al mismo tiempo que hacemos de todos los eventos accesibles a un grupo mayor de personas. Somos un festival autogestivo que recibe el apoyo de la jefatura local de cultura y danza, no obstante dependemos de donaciones monetarias, y tarifas de participación. Con la finalidad de reducir nuestros costos para aquellas personas que no cuentan con la posibilidad ni los recursos financieros para participar es que lanzamos este proyecto y buscamos tu apoyo y donación. Tu contribución ayudará a que estudiantes de todas las disciplinas, artistas emergentes, terapeutas, críticos, investigadores, jóvenes y el público en general se reúna en este encuentro construyendo una experiencia a través del cuerpo y su danza.
