Marcus's tuition assistance

I’m from the small Delta town of Helena, Arkansas. I’m also a proud 2017 graduate of KIPP Delta Collegiate High. I recently completed my first semester at my dream college, Ouachita Baptist University (OBU), where I major in Communications with a plan to one day host a radio show of my own. I didn’t make the best decisions early in my high school experience, but I persevered and I’m now officially one semester into my college experience. I know OBU is where I belong and I am motivated to get this degree and make my dreams happen. But I currently have a financial obstacle and I am asking for your support.

My Backstory

Looking back, I sometimes wonder how I even got into college.  As a teenager, I had dreams and goals, of course, but I didn't take school serious at all. I thought it was more important to be a class clown and distract my classmates than actually focus on the tasks at hand. It took me literally getting put out of school, enrolling in a GED program, and having the second chance to return to KIPP Delta an extra year for me to realize the damage I had done to myself and my family.

OBU is a place that I’ve grown to love so much, from the professors, to coaches, to teammates, workers, and students. It is a place that has drawn me even closer to knowing exactly who GOD is and his purpose for us as his children. It has been a roller coaster ride to get to OBU, but I am convinced I made the right decision.

The Situation

The unfortunate consequence of my high school story is that I am entering my freshman year without scholarships. If I can get over the financial hurdles of this freshman year, I am confident I can find and create opportunities next year and beyond.

My mother is a single parent who works multiple jobs to provide for her five children. She has committed to supporting me financially to attain my college goals, but I hate sitting back and watching her struggle trying to get me through school and me not be any help whatsoever.

Scholarships are on the horizon. I stepped outside of my comfort zone this semester and walked-on the OBU Tigers football team with no prior High school experience. I am in the running to earn a football scholarship for next year. I also have the plans to join ROTC and become a military officer after graduation. However, these funding opportunities will not fall into place until next year.

Currently, I need $2,000 by January 18th to continue my education in the Spring 2018 semester.  I understand that it’s at short notice, but continuing my college experience is very important to me and my family. So please, donate whatever is on your heart and just know that you are really being a blessing to me and my family in a big way and it is greatly appreciated.
