Marcos A. Vargas Memorial

When dad was gone 20 years ago, I did the best I could to help mom  keep an eye on my brother.  While he was only 6 when dad passed, Marcos lived a life that reflected my dad's values and dreams, dedication and commitment.

Marcos was sharp, clever and witty and loved his twin sister Aimee, his personality came to its fullest when they were both together. They had regular daily calls mostly at night to check in on each other and he could then encourage her to do her best.

He was described as a bright and dedicated attorney by the local news announcing his tragic death. For those who knew him for these last 26 years, our brother and friend reflected what a life would look like when lived out to its highest potential

From his love for God and country and dedication to his family, Marcos set his sight on completing a career in law at an early age. A fully licensed attorney in Mexico
then passed the California Bar by the age of 25.

My brother demonstrated and lived his love for our family daily, making tremendous sacrifices to attend my wedding in Australia, to assist my mom with her needs, to counsel my sister in her career, to advise my other brother with his business, spend time with his nieces and juggle his schedule with competing priorities.

Marcos had an innate ability to love the people in his community,  from the homeless and destitute who needed to navigate the intricacies of the law, to immigrants and children. Respecting the dignity of the human person was of outmost importance for him, with the amount of probono work he did being selfless and never driven by an agenda other than the law, justice and humanity, as his numerous friends and relations spanning across continents can testify.

When thinking of a way to explain who my brother was, the adjective ‘experiential’ comes to mind. You had to know him, appreciate his skills, and values, and would be naturally drawn to his charismatic personality. He was always willing to give a hand, whether reviewing a contract for a friend late at night to making time to connect with friends locally or abroad.

Marcos loved to experience life and culture and this involved food and sweets. He loved to eat and loved to travel, he loved his friends and he was loved by them. Through his amazement at the smallest things, whether the beauty of the sound of the waves to the sunset or the diversity in the world, you could always find in our brother and friend, a well rounded guy who simply loved life, and his persona reflected this
.

The sum of his life cannot be reduced to that tragic Tuesday night, and while we can never know when death will strike, surely it does not have the last word. My family and I are celebrating the beauty of his life, we just all wished we had more time to do that with him.

My family and I have put together this campaign
as a tribute and memorial, to celebrate Marcos' death.

The funeral will be held December 16th commencing with a viewing  from 12:00PM until 4:00PM. The funeral mass will be at 7:30PM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bakersfield, California.  A requiem  mass will be held in Mexico on the 6th of January at 5:00PM at Nuestra Señora del Rosario Catholic Church in Villa Corona, Jalisco México.

We ask that you support and celebrate Marcos' life through this endevour.

Please refer to additional updates regarding lodging options. We commend our family and Marcos to your prayers. May the Good Lord have mercy on his soul.
