This is for the woman whose smile can illuminate a room, the woman whose positive energy is contagious, and the woman who gives from the heart. This is for my best friend and the love of my life. Although she wears many heroic capes the one most important to me is my wife. Marci Saucedo Hernandez

Her Story
On January 27th, 2017, we received news that would dramatically change the course of our new life together as husband and wife when we found out Marci had stage 2 Breast Cancer. Just over three months after we were married, Marci started treatments to fight this disease.
Marci had earlier visited a clinic to check a lump in her breast. Because she lacked insurance, the check up was done by ultrasound and she was assured the lump was no cause for concern. After we were married, and with encouragement from me and her family, Marci went to a proper doctor. After a full day of appointments and tests, the cancer was immediately detected and confirmed a weeks later with official biopsy test results.
Her words, "I have stage two-three breast cancer," still haunt me to this day. We were devastated, but had to shift quickly to being strong and alert. All our hopes and dreams for our young marriage and starting a family would have to be put on hold. Marci would have to prepare for her toughest fight yet. And, I dedicated myself to supporting her with getting through this. Our team of doctors reassured us the cancer was treatable, but this would be a tough and long journey. The full treatment would be done in stages. First, the tumor, the mass of which was the size of a grapefruit, had to be shrunk down; this would take 16 chemotherapy sessions. Next would be a double mastectomy, the full removal of both breasts, followed by other treatments as needed, like radiation or hormone therapy. Finally, reconstruction of the breasts.
Marci made it safely through the chemotherapy sessions; she had been receiving weekly IV infusions starting in March. The side effects were tough, she had good and bad days. She’s remained positive and strong, fighting every step of the way. As the double mastectomy surgery fast approaches, October 4th, we are taking stock of what we need to do to ensure Marci’s healing is our first priority. We know she will need to take an approximately 6-months leave from work to recover from surgery and continue with ongoing check up appointments related to the reconstruction. The doctors are telling us the whole process will take about a year to a year-and-a-half. We have also drastically changed our eating habits to support Marci’s health. Additionally, we were advised by our team of doctors to get IVF treatment before Marci started chemotherapy, which was not covered by insurance, so that we can start a family when we are ready.

Even with insurance, the medical charges have been stacking up. Our first priority is Marci’s treatment and full recovery. To do this, we know we will have to make do with only one income for the time being. While we have been trying our best to make this work, we realize it’s time to turn to our community of family and friends for help.
