Just three weeks after the birth of his second daughter, at the young age of 39, James Manuel, suffered a massive stroke on January 31, 2018. Consequently, his fiancé and private practice partner, Morgan Lucas, was already on maternity leave, caring for their newborn and 1 1/2 year old daughters when this tragedy stuck.
In fact, between early morning feedings of their newborn, Morgan found James non- responsive and bent over his computer. She astutely assessed the severity of the situation and called for the ambulance. James was life-flighted to the hospital where a large clot was removed from his brain. He was also treated for multiple pulmonary embolisms and clots in both legs. He was on a ventilator for a short time after his surgery. Thankfully James has regained most of his physical mobility. However he is still working tirelessly to recover speech and other cognitive skills.
Prior to the birth of their infant daughter, James was wrongly denied insurance coverage based on Morgan's pregnancy. Unfortunately, due to the severity of James' condition, he will likely be out of work for a significant period of time with no source of income and no insurance coverage. Medical expenses are quickly piling up, with no end in sight. Bills from the ambulance and helicopter rides alone amount to over $25,000.00, not to mention the multiple surgeries, tests, and stay in the hospital. This family is now struggling to find ways to pay out of pocket to get James the occupational and speech therapy that he desperately needs in order to get back to work and provide for his family. Morgan is cutting her maternity leave short to return to work to keep her young family afloat. Juggling caring for her two young daughters, providing her own self-taught speech therapy to her fiancé, creating a care plan and fighting with insurance providers, and being her family's sole financial provider is overwhelming at best.
