Our Story: On Thursday, Jan 9th, our mom, Rhonda Schweska, was treated for a seizure when the medical staff of CGH discovered a mass on her brain. She was transferred to Rockford Memorial Hospital where tests confirmed she had a malignant tumor causing pressure on her brain. 36 hours later, she had surgery to remove the tumor from the front temporal lobe of the brain. 3 hours later, our family learned that she had Glioblastoma Mulitforme. This is a very rapid growing and aggressive cancer. The pathology report and the following prognosis is absolutely devastating. For adults with more aggressive glioblastoma, like my mom, provided with the most extensive treatment the median survival is 14 months. Only 30% on average see 2 years.
I am a graduate student, and my brother is soon deploying to Afghanistan and has a wife and two little ones to care for. Our mom has been denied and denied again, but by the grace of your positive energy, prayers, and the help of extraordinary people, she has been approved for Medicaid in record breaking timing.
Due to brain surgery, our mom has been left with severe right side weakness/paralysis, dysphagia, and aphasia. She is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation and will still need radiation and chemotherapy when she is strong enough to do so. We are looking at four weeks of in-patient rehab and many weeks of cancer treatment.
As a family, we all stand by her wishes to come home when she says that she is ready to come home. She can do out-patient treatment and live her life out where she desires. As this becomes more and more real by the second, the more and more we realize the immediacy and extensiveness of what is to come.
If love was a form of currency that paid the bills, this family would cure cancer, but no matter how hard we try, love will not treat glioblastoma. This is our story, and we know we can get by with a little help from our friends.
