Malaika's Diabetic Alert Dog

One year ago, Malaika was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This past year has been full of pokes, shots, carb counting, tears, adjusting, and overcoming! Malaika's courage and hope through it all has been astounding.
The scariest part of Type 1 is that blood sugar levels can drop very quickly and if not acted upon immediately, could be fatal. Without sugar in our body our organs cease to function (heart, brain, etc). It's imperative that low blood sugar be caught as quick as possible so that it can be remedied. God is brilliant and one of the unique ways that he made dogs is that they can smell changes in blood sugar in humans. They can sense when levels are becoming dangerously low or when levels are rising and needing insulin!
Diabetic Alert Dogs of America trains service dogs just for kids like Malaika. These dogs save lives daily by alerting the child (or parent) when their sugar levels are changing and need attention. Having a dog who follows you around all day (and night!) and can warn you and help you to stay in a safe zone, and is trained to go get an adult if more help is needed is a dream for Malaika! This kind of support allows for more freedom (mom not constantly hovering, playdayes, etc) as your service dog helps to make sure you are safe.
Ever since Malaika was diagnosed she has been asking and praying for a service dog. As you know, she's already a HUGE dog lover and having a furry companion who helps her manage her diabetes is a dream come true.
In honor of her one year anniversary of tackling this disease we've decided to launch this campaign for Malaika to finally be able to get her dog.
Thank you for your kind and incredible support this year as we adjusted to this new reality, and thank you for helping Malaika get her dream dog. Our hearts will rest a little more knowing someone else is helping to look after her.
