Mason Gage was born on June 29th 2018 with a congenital heart condition known as HLHS (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome). Which means that the left side of his heart was critically underdeveloped. This is considered a critical congenital heart defect. Babies born with this condition are unable to adequately pump oxygen rich blood to the body properly. A 1 year survival rate for children born with this condition is between 20-60%.
At birth Mason was rushed to a pediatric hospital where on his 4th day of life he underwent his first open heart surgery. The “Norwood procedure” consists of a 3-step surgery to help reconstruct the structures of his heart to help pump blood more effectively to his body. The surgeries are extremely complex and very dangerous, and many children do not successfully complete all 3 surgeries.
He was a fighter from the get go. Pulling through the surgery without complications. Then at 2 months he underwent a balloon angioplasty in his aortic arch and is still working hard to recover and maintain strength for the second sequence of the Norwood and Glenn procedure scheduled in November will be in Los Angeles. Mason is also scheduled to receive a research stem cell procedure out of state that may help improve the strength of right side of the heart.
To date his procedures have cost over $15,000 out of pocket for us. We have tried our hardest to manage these costs ourselves. At this point we are humbled enough to ask for help to ensure that Mason has access to the best possible care. We desperately need to secure the resources to fund his current medical bills and imminent costs that will occur during the Glenn and Fontan sequence of the procedures.
Our baby boy will require lifelong cardiac care as well as medication. Our goal is modest in comparison to what our actual costs will be. However, it is our duty to work just as hard to provide for these costs. We are both working full time and will do whatever is necessary to provide for our son.
