Help Sustain Our Community Clinic!

Donation protected

Welcome friends, old and new!

My name is Chisomo Kalinga (sister to Tatyana and Ronna, daughter to Jean and Godfrey). I am a board member of of Children's Hope*, a Virginia based NGO that raises funds for the  Malawian-American community and for initiatives in Malawi.*

We are raising money to purchase a maizemill for the people of Mtogolo Village--my ancestral home on my mother's side--a beautiful rural community based in Domasi, just north of Zomba, the formal capital of Malawi. The revenues from this maizemill will be used to fund our integrated, independent clinic.

Since 2011, the clinic has provided a range of services to the community of more than 50,000 people. These include basic medicines, family planning, free HIV antiretroviral treatment, immunizations and the treatment of tropical diseases such as malaria. As most of Mtogolo's citizens live in remote villages, we also provide patient transport and emergency ambulance services, and offer a range community health outreach (e.g. palliative care, malaria prevention, children's healthcare for under-5s, malnutrition programs in classrooms). These services are offered free of charge to the poorest citizens.

We have come to the end of our donor cycle and need to think of innovative ways to keep all of our health services available. While we explored asking for immediate relief, we believe that the best long-term solution is to fund a sustainable development project which will have far reaching impact to support community development.

To help us continue our services, we are asking for your help in the purchase of a maizemill (a machine for husking and processing maize, the staple crop in Malawi). Maize milling is a certified income generating activity (IGA) that will not only support community development but sustain revenues for our health services in the years to come.

Maize mills are virtually a guaranteed way to make money across sub-Saharan Africa. Most Malawians (more than 80%) are smallholder farmers and rely on maize crops for their daily dietary needs. Therefore, maize mills not only provide a service to feed families but also are job creating enterprises. We have selected a large, densely populated area (very close to the main road) in Mtogolo Village which currently does not have a maize mill within a 10 kilometers radius. This means we will not only provide economic empowerment to a community, but also enable them to support the health of their families!

We hope to raise the funds as soon as possible, by the first week of February ideally. Maizemills can be purchased, installed and made operational within days allowing us to generate immediate funds for our clinic.

We thank you in advance for your help and interest in Mtogolo Village!

*Children's Hope Malawi is a recognized non-governmental NGO in Malawi's NGO board CONGOMA (Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi). We are currently awaiting 501(c)3 certification in the United States. Therefore, for the purpose of this fundraiser, the beneficiary is listed as Jean Kalinga, who will apply 100% of the proceeds towards the purchase of the maizemill on behalf of Mtogolo Village. Please see below for an official invoice from our maizemill vendor and a copy of our NGO certification in Malawi. The total price of $5500 USD  equals Malawi Kwacha (MK) 3,600,000 for the machine cost plus an  MK358,000  VAT government taxes and fees at 10%. Currency conversion @MK 716 per $1 USD.
