On Sunday, February 18, 2018, Joel and Mirjam Davis' worst nightmare became reality.  They received the call that their only child, 17 year-old Madison "Mimi" Davis, her boyfriend, Jonathan, and their 16 year-old friend, Jimmy, were involved in a serious vehicle accident in Currituck County, NC.  All three children sustained life-threatening injuries.  Mimi and Jonathan were extracted from the vehicle and air lifted from the scene to Norfolk, VA's top Trauma Hospital.  Once stabilized, Jimmy was transported by ambulance to the trauma hospital.

Mimi was attempting to cross a four lane highway.  When she pulled out, their vehicle was struck on the driver's side by an oncoming pickup truck.  The impact propelled Mimi's car, causing it to roll and settle upside down on the roof.

When medics arrived, Mimi was unconscious at the scene.  She sustained a depressed skull fracture, which caused bleeding in her brain and diminished sight in her left eye.  Her right ear canal was broken in two, resulting in hearing impairment.  She fractured her pelvis in 5 places and had internal bleeding.  She also suffered a fractured femur and broke her sacrum in her lower spine.

Mimi, mom, and dad have spent several days in the Intensive Care Unit where  she underwent surgery to repair her pelvis.  Doctors expect her body and her brain to heal, but indicate that it will be a long process.  It is unknown at this time what the prolonged effects of the head injury may be.  Mimi suffered debilitating migraine headaches and wasn’t able to eat or drink for several days at the hospital and doctor’s came close to utilizing a feeding tube to provide needed nutrition.

Mimi's initial recovery was slow, but she steadily progressed the past few days and was recently moved to a step-down unit.  As of this writing she has been in the hospital for a week but is expected to be released to go home soon where she will remain wheelchair bound for at least a month. She will then face restricted movement with a prolonged period time on crutches. Once her pelvis has healed, there will be lengthy physical therapy to enable Mimi to regain mobility.  This will be a painful recovery as she begins to walk and to build muscle strength again. Mimi will also undergo additional  neurological, auditory and vision testing and may face additional surgery to repair the damage to her ear canal to restore her partial hearing loss.  It is unknown if her vision impairment will improve as her brain heals.

The Davis family is facing enormous medical, and potential, legal expenses.  Any contributions that can help this wonderful family offset the financial burden facing them would be greatly appreciated.  The Davis family believes that the Gillette family will soon be setting up a similar GoFundMe account to help offset Jonathan’s own financial difficulties, and they will then add this link to her CaringBridge.org page to help spread the word.  In the meantime the Davis Family intends to help Jonathan by sharing any funds raised with his family. Jimmy was less severely injured but the Davis family also intends to assist his family financially if needed for medical care.
