A heavy tree branch fell on me while I was traveling alone in Zadar, Croatia. I suffered head, back, and arm injuries, but most seriously my left knee was destroyed. The upper part of the shin bone (the lower half of the knee) was cracked and pushed backwards, and the side of the knee was splintered and caved in. This type of injury requires surgery or the joint will never work again. Although my insurance said they would pay, they reneged and I elected to have the surgery anyway in Austria, because to delay risked permanent damage and loss of function. As my knee could not bend and I was in extreme pain, there was no way to fly to the US for the surgery. Being abroad caused a lot of problems as well.
Between the hospital bills in Croatia and Austria, medicines, equipment, medical transport, and follow-up visits, the total owed is about 19,000 euros or about $21,000. I am grateful for any support, even just one dollar, as I am facing bankruptcy if I do not resolve things. My family has temporarily floated me some money to cover the basics, but I am heavily in debt and want to make sure the hospitals are paid so that they can continue to care for others. Thank you.
