Nursing trip to Ghana

Donation protected
For those who may know me or those who don't thank you so much for choosing to read about my fundraising.

My name is Bethany Attwood, I am currently a second year student at Edge Hill University studying Child Nursing. Fortunately I have the opportunity to complete one of my placements abroad at the end of my second year as part of my degree. I have decided I want to volunteer in Takoradi, Ghana and will be there for 4 weeks flying out on the 5th January 2019.

Why Ghana?

I chose Ghana for my placement as I would like to gain experience in a different healthcare setting such as a developing country. I am passionate about expanding my knowledge in different conditions in children. Whilst in Takoradi I will have the opportunity to spend a week on an inpatient ward where I will help to care for children aged 3 weeks to 12 years who may have cases such as malaria (especially severe cerebral malaria), haemolytic anaemia, pneumonia, sickle cell disease, typhoid and meningitis.
I will also spend a week in the outpatients unit treating around 50 cases a day which are children with some of the conditions mentioned above as well as skin and ear conditions. My third week in Ghana I will spend in obstetrics helping the Ghanaian mother's give birth to their babies. Then finally my fourth week I will spend in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for a week caring for newborns up to 3 weeks old who are severely unwell.
The amazing part about my placement in Ghana will be having the exposure of conditions in children which we are unlikely to see in the UK. As Ghana is a developing country I will have the chance to care for children suffering with malnutrition and attend HIV clinics. During the weekend I will have some free time in which I will visit the local orphanage. I am hoping to take an extra suitcase full of toys, clothes, pencils and notepads to donate to the children.
As for the hospital I will be purchasing medical supplies whilst in Ghana as when I arrive I will be able to find out what they desperately are in need of at that moment, and by purchasing the supplies in Ghana the money will support the local economy.

Why do I need your help?

As I am going to Ghana as a student at the end of my second year, this means I will have to continue working towards my full time degree in the mean time. I am not able to work as much as I'd like to due to full time hours on other placements, and many assignments and exams to complete. Despite this I will still continue to work as much as I can which will contribute towards this trip!

Breaking down the cost:
£1500 covers 4 weeks accommodation, transport and food
£570 return flight (approx.)
£90 extended travel insurance
£60 Ghana entry Visa
£30 towards the cost of appropriate vaccinations (such as yellow fever)

I have chosen to do my placement through an organisation called Work the World which ensures my safety throughout the whole trip including 24/7 security at the house I am staying at. The best part about this organisation is I am staying with housemates coming on placement like me from all over the world, which is a great opportunity to learn about healthcare systems from other countries and share our experiences! Work the World also organise my transport to and from the airport and provide free language lessons whilst I am in Ghana so I can speak to the locals in Fante!

As well as this page, I will be contributing my wages and hopefully with the help from car boot sales, cake sales and events etc I will be able to hit my target! I am hoping to raise more than the amount I need to go in order to take this money over to buy medical supplies. Hand sanitiser, gloves, disposable masks and oxygen masks are all limited supplies in Ghana but here in the UK they are our basic infection control measures we have in place that we take for granted.

Deadline
I have to have paid and sent everything off by 7th November 2018 - 2 months before I go!
This is something I am so passionate about doing, and I am so grateful for this opportunity. So to anybody that took the time to read this, any donation big or small is greatly appreciated! Or even just sharing my story with your friends and family.

Hopefully on my return I will be able to update everybody on how my trip went, and again thank you so much for your donations. I can't thank you enough.
