My name is Nick (very right), and my mother, Karen, was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer in August 2013. She was previously diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, but had been in remission after a double-mastectomy on the day of her birthday in October of that year.
Since being re-diagnosed, she has had countless PET scans, CT scans, chemotherapy injections, and has been taking what seems like endless amounts of oral chemotherapy medications. Lately I've been rushing her to the hospital at least once a month from either constant vomiting or chest pains that have been causing issues breathing. She left her job in October 2014 and filed for disability.
It is February 2015 and her husband has decided that he doesn't want to continue supporting his ill wife, so he took his things and left our home. Joe (very left) and I work full time to make end's meet, while Jayme (left center) is still in high school and works part-time, but a 17, 19, and 20-year old can only bring in so much income to keep a roof over our head, not to mention medical expenses. Mom's health insurance is through her soon to be ex-husband, and we don't know when she'll lose it and we'll start having more expensive bills pile up.
My mom has always been my hero. She's always been the one person that I can say would drop anything for us three boys. The determination and the drive that she's shown to survive for our family is something that I've never seen in anyone else, and probably never will. With your help, the three of us boys can continue to be inspired and loved by perhaps the greatest thing that ever happened to us: our mom.
