Thank you for visiting this page dedicated to this extraordinary man, Lynn. He is currently battling terminal cancer.
Lynn Syverson is a devoted husband and a dedicated father to four grown children. Lynn proudly served 14 ½ years in the U.S. Army. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served during that conflict in Korea.
When in good health, Lynn used to love working on cars. He would attend car shows with his family on a regular basis. Lynn could tell you the make, model and year of every car he saw, providing many fond memories recounted by his daughters. Lynn had other hobbies including but not limited to woodworking and watching old movies. He is fascinated by modern science. He also loves Blues music and used to attend concerts as well as the local Blues Fest every year.
Lynn was first diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma cancer in 1992. He survived this very rare type of cancer that was believed to have derived from exposure to Agent Orange, a chemical used by the U.S. Military as part of their herbicidal warfare program during the Vietnam war. Regrettably, Lynn’s military service began one year after the cutoff date for agent orange related military health claims.
Lynn underwent aggressive treatments to include Radiation, Chemotherapy and suffered through a Hemipelvectomy amputation where he lost his leg and was left with just a small portion of his hip on the right side.
Despite his devastating surgery, Lynn was determined to return to the workforce as a computer programmer and managed to do so in 1997.
In May of 2015, Lynn collapsed at home. After a series of tests during his hospital stay he was diagnosed with Congestive Heart failure and Cardiomyopathy, a disease that affects the heart muscle. After several hospitalizations, Lynn would then endure bypass heart surgery August of that same year. Sadly, his heart was severely damaged to the point that left Lynn’s heart functionality at a nominal 25 percent. In spite of this, he resolved to continue working from home.
January of the following year (2016) Lynn went through a medical physical in hopes of being able to return to work as the medical bills were really starting to pile up. It was at this time his physician noticed Lynn had acquired a raspy voice and referred him to an eye, ear, nose and throat (EENT) specialist.
February 2, 2016 the (EENT) examined Lynn’s throat and was alarmed enough by a growth in his throat to insist that Lynn see another specialist right away. On February 4, 2016, Lynn and his wife braced themselves as the other specialist confirmed it was cancer. He then submitted to a Biopsy, several blood tests, PET Scans and MRI’s which as determined it was a Stage III Squamous Cell Carcinoma. The cancer had paralyzed his vocal chords on one side which in turn prohibited the doctors from saving his larynx (voice box).
His medical treatment plan was to again undergo more surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Lynn unfortunately developed bed sores due to his subsequent hospitalizations prior to withstanding surgery again.
Lynn collapsed again in April of 2016, due to the restriction of his airway by the cancerous tumor. He was intubated and transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where a tracheostomy was performed. On April 18, 2016 Lynn had a total Laryngectomy, removing the tumor, as well as his larynx, lymph nodes, and involved tissues. His medical team performed reconstructive surgery to rebuild his esophagus with tissue from his left arm so that he could eat, once he had healed from his procedures. His cancer had reached Stage IV by the time the surgery was done.
Lynn completed his last set of Radiation sessions in July 2016, and made his recovery at home. Subsequent tests were promising until he again collapsed in February 2017. Testing determined the cancer had spread. Surgery was no longer an option, and the radiation had not worked. His physician informed the family that chemotherapy and immunotherapy would make Lynn terribly ill and make him suffer unnecessarily while hastening his final days.
Due to the multiple catastrophic illnesses, Lynn and his family have incurred an insurmountable amount of debt trying to keep up with medical bills related to his cancer treatments, surgeries and subsequent hospital stays.
Many items required for his care were not covered by insurance, and were paid for out of pocket so Lynn could be comfortable at home.
With him not being able to work they are unable to pay their monthly rent and are struggling to stay in their home which is specially equipped with wheelchair accommodations, and are currently at risk of being evicted.
Lynn’s wife wishes are to keep Lynn happy and provide him with the best quality of life possible in his final days. To be able to stay in their home and have funds available for Lynn’s material comfort and final arrangements.
