Lungs for Bri - Double Lung Transplant Fundraiser

Please share Brianne's story!

Brianne Boucher was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 3 months old.  Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. Presently, there is no cure. CF affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine.

Brianne is now 17 years old and has had to endure multiple reoccurring lung infections typically resulting in long term hospital admissions, daily physiotherapy, dietary alterations, nebulizer treatments, consumption of up to three dozen pills (daily) and lengthy oxygen dependency treatments. Contributing  to Brianne's already complicated life, she was sadly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes layering on another thick dose of daily treatments and continuous monitoring. Brianne is the most tenacious and resilient young lady you can meet but unfortunately Brianne and her family is now faced with another major milestone, and this milestone is a matter of life and death.

Lung transplantation often becomes necessary for individuals with CF as lung function and exercise tolerance decline. Lung transplantation is considered when lung function declines to the point where assistance from a mechanical device is required or someone's survival is threatened. Brianne recently completed a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), a diagnostic test that measures the lungs' ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. An average PFT result is considered normal if the score is 80 percent or better. Brianne’s result was a score of 21. Transplant is often necessary with a result below 30 when a person is above 30 but is oxygen dependent. It's very unfortunate but Brianne meets the criteria for both.

Why are we asking for money?

Brianne, Sandie (Mother) and Mark (Father) live in Sudbury, Ontario. For Brianne to access the life saving lung transplant treatment Brianne and Sandie must both relocate to Toronto to attend the nearest transplant facility leaving behind their Father to maintain their Sudbury home. Adding to the stress with the family separation are enormous financial implications. This is to help Brianne and Sandie with the living costs, uncovered medications, travel expenses, and other costs associated with the relocation. This is  significant challenge that is going to cost Brianne and Sandie thousands of dollars which they do not have and time is of the essence.
