Lung transplant for John

Recently my dad, John Velasquez, was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). That means the alveoli in his lungs are over grown with fibrous tissue and the cause is unknown. Currently my dad is experiencing difficult, painful breathing, shortness of breath, fatigue and cough. IPF symptoms worsen over time and could cause collapsed lung, infections, respiratory and/or heart failure.
There is no cure for IPF but we have been given some hope. The amazing team at Stanford University have evaluated him and have determined he would be a good candidate for a lung transplant. Part of their evaluation includes a financial and social support evaluation. They ask that we begin fundraising to help make this extremely expensive surgery possible. The team has explained that while insurance will cover most of the surgery we still still need to come up with a significant amount of money to pay additional expenses. These expenses include transportation, food and lodging while traveling to and from appointments, medications, and supplies. Once he gets the transplant he and his wife Dolores will be required to relocate to be near the hospital. He will require 24 hr care for at least 3 months. This also means Dolores will have to take time off work, adding to the expense.
So far, Dad and Dolores have been managing these expenses on their own but now is the time we ask for help!
