Luna Coquito’s Story
*( The nickname "Coquito" comes from the shampoo with coconut smell from her first bath )
We rescued Luna from Henry County Animal Control on June 17, 2020. She fit the bill of what we were looking for, and it was “love at first meow.” We took her home and gave her a much needed flea bath, and I took her to the vet for her vaccines and tests the next day.
Everything was great until Saturday, June 20th, when she was limping, not eating, and was really warm. The emergency vet found a fever of 105 which was high enough to kill her. They gave her a fever reducer, some antibiotics, an appetite stimulator, and a cast for her leg. The total cost was $317.37.
The next day, June 21, she was warm again and not eating, even after getting her medicine. She seemed so miserable that I took her to the vet again, and she had a fever of 106! They told me that the best solution is to hospitalize her for three days so her temperature and health would be monitored. The cost was $533. I had to use our credit card in advance or they wouldn’t take her.
It was a hard decision to make because we don’t have that much money to spare, but Luna wanted to LIVE! She would keep trying to play or stand and we were not giving up on her! I called every day she was in the hospital, and her fever kept coming back with a vengeance. She ended up staying a fourth day and was discharged Thursday, June 23, with medicine and vitamins to be given at home.
The last bill from the hospital, including her extra day, medicine, blood work, and special food was $380.19, bringing the total for her hospital treatments to $1,230.56. This does not include her initial vet visit and vaccines, because we had saved up money for those. But I am asking for help for the emergency bill which puts us into debt with our credit card.
Luna has been recently diagnosed with a Giardia infection. She had really bad diarrhea (she was having stool leaks unintentionally) and was not gaining any weight. The cost for the stool test and new medicine was $124.32
We are hoping that these are the last of Luna's health problems. The leaking has stopped and she is having more solid stools. Her treatment is for 10 days and she will need a second stool test after that which is $30.50
Every day I thank God for the miracle of her recovery and for the veterinarians that took care of her.

She was not even a year old and she was fighting to live! We don’t know if she was sick before the adoption or if something happened from the initial vet visit, but when she first looked at me from that cold cage in animal control, she called me to help her. We do not regret my decision, but we would appreciate some help.
