Luke's Medical Fund

On Saturday 11/11/2017 there was a tragic accident at our farm. A can of old fuel exploded and caught Luke’s pants on fire. After “stop, drop, and roll” was unsuccessful, he tried to pull his pants off but they were caught on his boots. He jumped up and hopped with his flaming pants around his ankles over to our horse water trough and dove in to extinguish himself. Thankfully that quick decision making saved the rest of his body, but he suffered severe second and third degree burns between his knees and his ankles. We rushed to the hospital and realized just how serious things were when they saw that on one leg the burns were circumferential and could result in cutting off circulation to his foot. Thankfully, the swelling didn’t get bad enough for that to happen, but he did require skin graft surgery on both of his legs. After a few days of testing, washing the wounds, dealing with the pain, and seeing how everything progressed, he underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon. Currently it is day 3 out of 5 of bedrest. Today they changed his bandages for the first time since the skin graft surgery and the practitioner said everything looked like it’s healing nicely. We’re hoping to not be in the hospital for long, but only time will tell, and after we leave there will be a very long road to recovery. Luke will basically be learning how to walk again through physical therapy. A walker will be his best friend for a while.

As you can imagine, this whole situation has a lot of obstacles. Our biggest one being- Luke doesn’t have health insurance. We have no idea how this is going to affect us financially. We’re hoping financial aide will be kind to us, but again, time will tell. Obviously Luke will be out of work for quite some time. The 12 hour days of labor intensive work for a paycheck won’t be back anytime soon. The farm work will fall on the shoulders of me and friends and family, and our animals won’t be receiving the training that they need in order to be in tip-top shape.

Your generosity through donation will be put towards the medical expenses that we’re currently accumulating and the months of follow-up appointments to come. It will also be used to keep us and our animals sheltered and fed. Every little bit counts and we greatly appreciate anything you can spare. Thank you for considering helping us. It means a lot to have friends and family who love us and are willing to help in this time of need.
