Lucky and the Triplets Need Your Help

Tax deductible
Lucky and the triplets need your help.

Last week, we were contacted by the daughter and wife of a local pig farmer. They had fallen in love with one of the pigs at the farm, named Lucky . Lucky has a hernia that he has never been treated for. It is standard practice on most farms to just kill someone with a hernia like this, and not have it surgically repaired. Lucky is only a baby still; he is five months old, and pigs can live to be the same age as your dog, about 20 years old. Already he is at the age that most pigs are slaughtered at. Lucky was at risk of becoming another victim of unregulated, legal, backyard slaughter, but fortunately, the daughter and wife of the farmer had a soft spot for Lucky. They asked us if we could bring him to sanctuary.

The truth is, we are not able to save everyone who needs help, and this reality is devastating. (Leaving the other pigs behind at this farm broke our hearts ). Every once in a while, though, we are able to intervene and change someone’s entire life. At Aloha Animal Sanctuary, we are currently at capacity for pigs. We knew immediately we didn't have the space for Lucky. However, we shared his story with Paula of Big Island Farm Sanctuary. Without hesitation, she told us she would take Lucky, if we could just get him to her. Big Island Farm Sanctuary, like Aloha, believes in providing a lifelong home for farmed animals in need. We love having the opportunity to work with BIFS and consider them to be our “sister sanctuary”.

Needless to say, we immediately went to the farm to rescue Lucky. After we got Lucky into the van, we were shocked when the daughter of the farmer asked us if we wanted to rescue any more. We had previously asked her if this would be possible, but we were told we would have to pay $100/pig. At the sanctuary, we refuse to pay money for animals, as this only perpetuates this cruel cycle of exploitation. You can only imagine our surprise and joy when the daughter and her mother convinced the farmer to surrender three more piglets, in addition to Lucky. In total, FOUR lives were SAVED .

Lucky is now scheduled for his hernia repair and neutering with an incredible vet, Dr. Kelly of Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services. Lucky is well over 100 lbs and most vets will not operate on pigs of his size. To say Dr. Kelly is an angel is just not sufficient. Not only will she be performing Lucky's surgery, but she will be spaying all three of the piglets (who randomly ended up all being girls!). Their surgeries are all scheduled for this week!!

In addition to surgery costs, we are asking for financial help with transporting the babies to their new home on Big Island Farm Sanctuary. They will be travelling by 30-minute plane ride to get to BIFS. So if anyone has ever told you "when pigs fly", well, guess what?! These four precious babies are about to be doing just that ✈️!

Please consider donating to help Lucky and the girls get the veterinary care they desperately need, by making a tax-deductible donation to our 501(c)3 non-profit. All donations through this fundraiser will go directly toward Lucky and the girls' care. Thank you so much for your generosity and support, together, we are the sanctuary, and every one of you plays an important role in helping the animals
