Lucas Kramer, 18, is a brilliant young man, and one of the youngest students ever admitted to the University of Minnesota (at age 11!!). He graduated with a BS in computer science, completed his Masters in electrical engineering, and entered the doctoral program at age 15. Lucas was working this summer as an intern at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California.
On August 16, 2018, while riding his bike to work at Google, Lucas was involved in a one-vehicle accident with a truck. The truck was traveling 45 mph in the bicycle lane when it struck him. Lucas sustained massive traumatic injuries to his face and body and has undergone emergency surgeries at Stanford Medical Center.
While accidents involving a vehicle and a bicyclist are tragically often fatal, thankfully Lucas survived. He was wearing his bicycle helmet (see his CaringBridge site for photos) and his Beautiful Mind was spared. Lucas is dealing with memory loss (not surprisingly), but is conscious and responsive. However, he faces a long road to recovery. Doctors say Lucas will likely need an additional $50,000 of surgeries. And there will be months and months of rehabilitation, therapy, and ongoing care.
