Liz Shuman's fight against CF!

To know Liz is to love her. She is the epitome of grace, light and love. She is an amazing friend, always listening and providing positive feedback, encouragement and energy to friends, family and clients (she works as a social worker helping adolescents and families).

At a young age of seven, Liz was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a life-threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. CF causes a buildup of thick mucus in the lungs, which makes it very difficult to breathe. Today, the average life expectancy for someone living with CF is 37.

Thanks to her positive attitude and medical research, Liz has beaten the odds and turned 38 this past September. However, life with CF hasn’t been without its complications. Liz has developed pancreatitis and diabetes, has incurred cracked ribs from coughing, spends hours in her vest to help her breathe, and administers the daily care required to treat diabetes and CF.

For Liz, Cystic Fibrosis is not only medically and emotionally stressful but also financially draining. Liz spends thousands of out-of-pocket dollars on medicine and devices essential for her survival. Though she is currently working, it is getting to the point where working is not the best option for Liz's health. She will be faced with high insurance rates along with many medical bills.
