The wait is long overdue and it's time we all do what we can to help...
I want to start by saying that family means everything to me. I was fortunate to be born as the twin brother of Taylor James Ekey.
On November 19, 2016 Taylor married the girl of his dreams, Summer Nicole (Dean) Ekey. Our family couldn’t have been more happy for them because they are perfect for each other.
Fastforward 2 years..
On July 2, 2018 Summer was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer Invasive Ductal Carinoma Stage 1b. Summer found the lump through self examination. Triple negative is the most aggressive form of breast cancer. Only 10-20% of women with breast cancer are triple negative. I am sure Summer had thoughts about her grandma, who passed away at a young age from breast cancer, and her mother who has battled through 3 different occurrences of breast cancer.
Summer had a double mastectomy on August 9, 2018. The doctor gave them hope that she might not need chemo after surgery but at her post op visit and after finding out the BRCA1 Mutation testing came back positive, the doctor told her she would need it. This was devastating news them
Taylor and Summer went to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa for a second opinion on Summer needing chemo and Moffitt agreed 100% that she does need the chemo. They like the doctors at Moffitt so they are choosing to continue treatment there. The doctors at Moffitt are also going to be giving Summer an injection called Goserelin to keep their hope of expanding their own little family alive!
Summer had her first Chemo treatment yesterday at Moffitt, October 12, 2018.
She will get a total of 4, one every three weeks. They will be driving over for each chemo treatment and each of the Goserelin shots in between. Once the chemo is finished Summer will have another surgery for breast reconstruction
which is surely a lot for a young couple to endure. I feel so bad for them and wanted to do something to help them out. They are so strong and I just can’t say how proud I am of my brother for the husband he is, the brother he is and to Summer for the strength she exudes and the positivity she smiles!
Their medical bills are continuously rising and it bothers my heart to know that they not only have to deal with the burden of cancer, but they have to do it while worrying about the bills stacking up! If there is anything you can do, our families will be forever grateful, but if you can't, there is no hard feelings...just before you lay your head down at night, say a prayer for the both of them and keep them on your hearts.... Like the the proverb states, It Takes A Village... THANK YOU ALL FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS! WE LOVE SUMMER AND HATE cancer!
