Love Endures

Everyone knows how devastating and merciless cancer is. Everyone knows someone battling and fighting and hoping. Everyone knows there are no real winners in this fight- there are sometimes survivors, but that fight always comes with a price. My beautiful, courageous and fierce step-sister Lisa beat cancer's ass once- there should have been no need to have to fight this evil again. Everyone also knows that there is no such thing as fairness or justice when dealing with this malevolent disease. And so she was pulled back in, and she scratched and clawed and swung for days and weeks and months, valiant and determined; forever hopeful and always with an understated grace that gave no hint to her warrior heart that refused to give in...at the end, there is always the disbelief, the sorrow, the rage and anguish and pain. And there is always the collateral damage that these fights inevitably inflict. The broken hearts and broken homes and broken lives that time can dull but never mend; the financial messes that seem insurmountable; the hole in our lives that memories try to fill, knowing all the while that they will never be what we really want.
