Lorelei's Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Lorelei Rose Nelson was born 3/1/17. After a normal pregnancy, she lost oxygen and blood flow during birth, leading to a diagnosis of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE). Hypoxic means lack of oxygen; Ischemic means lack of bloodflow; and Encephalopathy means pertaining to the brain.
She was intubated and placed on a ventilator (a breathing tube was placed down her throat in order to breathe for her), and her heart began beating by itself. Doctors told us she most likely would not come off the ventilator and never breathe on her own. But after 10 days, she was stepped down to CPAP (supplying Continuous Positive Air Pressure through her nose) for breathing support, and 11 days later, she was breathing completely on her own with no outside oxygen. Lorelei spent 48 days in the NICU at UT before coming home for the first time on April 18. Since then, she has had 5 stays totaling another 48 days in Children's Hospital due to different illnesses.
Lorelei does not swallow, so she requires a lot of suctioning and must be fed through a G-Tube (a feeding tube placed directly into her stomach). She has Epilepsy and Chronic Lung Disease and often requires oxygen support while sleeping. She has a whole host of other diagnoses, but everything stems from her HIE.
We have been presented an opportunity to try Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as a treatment for Lorelei's brain injury. Lorelei will be placed in a pressurized chamber with 100% oxygen in order to allow her body to help heal itself. There have been many success stories come from HBOT, but it is a rather costly treatment that insurance will not cover. We will have to travel to Wauseon, Ohio, for a 4-week stay in order to complete the treatment at Sara's Garden.
