Looking for a Ray of Hope.

Twenty-six years ago, our step-dad came into our moms life.  His name was Ray and he became her 'Ray of Sunshine'.  His smile is one that will light up a room, make any stranger feel like an instant friend and take away your worries.  

A bricklayer by trade, Ray was a real mans-man who we knew could  fix anything.  Ray loved the outdoors: camping, hunting, hiking, biking and fishing - he also loved working with his hands, whether it was woodworking or jewelry making.  But under the layers of this mans-man is also a tender heart, a warrior poet, whose captured so many of his raw tender emotions in beautifully eloquent words which he has used as a gift to be shared with those who surround him.  

Anyone who has had a conversation with Ray has also been given a glimpse into this mans heart.  He will share stories of his childhood, his adventures as a young man,  even give you some tips on how to grow and cultivate any sort of plant.  But he is also most likely to tell you stories about his loves: his wife (our mom), his grandchildren and his faith.  

But sometimes even a Ray of Sunshine can be overshadowed by a dark cloud.  Over the last few decades, this dark cloud has been a number of chronic health issues that are all internal and invisible; but debilitating and painful.  These illnesses have been slowly eating away at his body, limiting his mobility,  depleting his energy and robing him of the simple pleasures in life.  

My mom and Ray have always loved the outdoors, whether it's going for a walk along the boardwalk in Kelowna, taking a weekly trip to the farmers market, attending their grandchildren's sporting activities, enjoying a quiet day fishing on the lake or taking a daily walk to the mailbox.  Most recently, these illnesses have started to affect his nervous system in his hands and feet to the point where he is now unable to walk any distance outside of his home.  The limitation in his mobility coupled with a depletion in energy has stopped him from being able to pursue his hobbies and enjoy this beautiful city that he lives in.  

Ray has tried to deal with this new development to the best of his ability and to push through the pain to do the things that bring him joy.  But we have seen the limitations and now it's our job to help with the solution.  

Our mom and Ray have found a light-weight electric wheelchair that will allow Ray to have mobility both in the house and around the community.  This electric chair is agile enough to fit through doorways,  light enough for our mom to lift  and will collapse so that it fits perfectly in their car and can be taken wherever they go.  

We are reaching out to those who have been impacted by Ray's life as we work towards the goal of getting Ray mobile again.   Please help us bring a Ray of Sunshine back into our mom and step-dads life.
