Little Lola's Stroke Recovery Fund

On March 31, 2017, the life an adorable 3-year old, Lola, changed forever when she suffered a major stroke. This spunky, active little girl, who was excelling in physical abilities, is now paralyzed on the left side of her body.
Lola also has Down syndrome and Graves’ disease, however, doctors believe neither contributed to her stroke. The stroke severely injured Lola’s right side of her brain and after extensive medical evaluations, the cause of the stroke is still unknown.
Not only can Lola not move her left leg or arm, but she also cannot swallow liquids without aspirating. This is actually an improvement since the stroke when she could not swallow anything. She currently has an NG tube to get complete hydration.
Before the stroke, Lola was doing great at her new preschool and in her therapy sessions for Down syndrome, particularly excelling in her fine and gross motor skills. Her favorite things were to run after bubbles and chase her big sister around the playground.
Lola’s long-term prognosis is unknown, but what we do know is her recovery will likely extend throughout her life and there is no guarantee she will ever walk again. The family is devastated by this news because not only will it be a long and difficult road for Lola to potentially retrain her brain, she also has Down syndrome making her road to recovery even more difficult.
As parents, the love for our children is profound. When they hurt, we hurt more. To have this happen to your child causes unfathomable pain and worry.
Lola’s parents, Jess and Mauro, also have 2 other young children: Amelia (4) and Evan (16 months). To make matters more challenging for the family, they just left their community and support system to move to South Carolina less than 4 months ago.
Lola will soon begin intensive therapy at a rehab facility 100 miles from her home in SC. Jess will stay at the rehab facility with Lola for several weeks so she can access their physical, occupational, and speech therapy every day.
Due to Lola’s very young age, and with intensive therapy, we are hoping her brain can eventually regain function of her left side and potentially walk again one day. No matter what, the family has a long and uncertain road ahead of them and need all the support we can provide.
We are starting this GoFundMe page to help raise funds for Lola's medical and therapy bills as well as additional support needed in her journey such as in-home care and potential medical devices.
