Local Veteran Fighting Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Donation protected
Matt Summerfield, born and raised in Bonners Ferry, was recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. What began as an ER visit on September 11 for stomach pains has now become a literal fight for his life.

After one week at Kootenai Medical Center for nonstop testing, he was diagnosed with AML on September 18th and immediately began chemotherapy. Matt is now in isolation for 3 weeks as he can't be exposed to so much as a cold.

Matt graduated from BFHS in 1998 and promptly joined the United States Army. After boot camp he went to Engineering and Airborne training followed by rappelling school. He was a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne engineers. He served at Fort Bragg, N.C. as well as tours in Bosnia and Iraq, where his duties included searching for roadside bombs.

Matt is currently employed by Idaho Forest Group in Moyie Springs and it is his prayer that he will be healthy and back to work soon!

Matt is a hardworking family man- husband to Mindy and proud Dad to four; Katie, last year’s Distinguished Young Woman, Jake, a junior at BFHS and champion wrestler, and toddlers Ethan and Emma.

Always one to offer a helping hand and never ask for help, at this time when he is unable to work and medical bills are mounting, we owe it to him to help in any way we can!

Matt has a warrior’s heart and will use it to fight this battle.

Family and friends invite you to join them at 5:30 p.m. Friday, October 16, at the Boundary County Fairgrounds for a dinner and silent auction to raise funds for Matt and his family.
